A template is a ready-made simulation or coach that devlin.ai curates. Using one creates your own draft copy, which you then edit and publish like anything else you build. Templates are available on every plan, and using one does not use credits.
Before you start
- Anyone can browse the gallery and open a template without signing in. Using a template needs an account. See Signing in and first steps.
- Open the workspace the copy should belong to. The draft is created in the workspace that is active when you use the template.
- A template is either a simulation or a coach. Each one is labelled, so check the label before you use it.
Steps
- Open the gallery at Templates. From inside the app, open Studio, select Create, then select Browse templates at the bottom of the Create new dialog. The link is on the first screen of the dialog, where you choose what to create, and on the Knowledge base screen. It is not on the simulation or coach screens.
- Look through the gallery. Each card shows the template's name, a short description, and a Simulation or Coach label. Templates are shown in one list.
- Select a card to open the template's page. The page shows the same name and description, with a label that reads "Simulation template" or "Coach template". All templates takes you back to the gallery.
- Select Use this template. The button reads Setting up... while your copy is created.
- The new draft opens in the editor: the simulation editor for a simulation template, the coach editor for a coach template.
If you are not signed in
Use this template takes you to the sign-in page. After you sign in, with any sign-in method, you return to the same template's page. Signing in does not create the copy by itself: select Use this template again. If your account uses two-factor authentication and you have not entered a code in this session, the button takes you to the code screen first and then back to the template.
Result
You have a new draft in your active workspace, named after the template. It is a separate copy. Nothing you change in it affects the template, and you can use the same template again to get another copy. Each copy has the same name, so rename a draft if you keep more than one.
The copy is created as a draft. Using a template never publishes anything.
What the copy contains
The template supplies the content, and devlin.ai creates the draft the same way it creates one you build yourself. Any setting the template leaves out gets the same default as a new simulation or coach.
A simulation template can supply:
- The character: name, description and instructions for how the character behaves.
- The learner's role and the scenario context.
- Behavior triggers (what the character does when the learner does something specific).
- The opening line, whether the character speaks first, and the placeholder text in the learner's input box.
- End conditions and a turn limit. See How a simulation ends.
- Custom course variables.
- Evaluation criteria, deductions and a pass threshold, with the feedback settings that go with them. See Evaluation and scoring.
- The length of the character's replies.
A coach template can supply the coach's name, role and personality, its guidance level, custom instructions, a welcome message and reference content.
A copy, simulation or coach, starts with a first entry in its version history. For simulations, see version history.
What to do next
- Edit the draft so that it fits your learners: change the character, the scenario and the criteria. See Building a simulation.
- Publish it when it is ready. See Publishing a simulation.
To start from your own description instead, see Creating a simulation.
If a template cannot be used
- "You've used several templates recently. Please try again in a bit." Each person can use up to 20 templates per hour. Wait, then try again.
- "Template not found" The template was removed from the gallery after you opened its page. Go back to All templates and choose another.
- "Couldn't use this template. Please try again." The request did not go through, or the server gave no reason. Select Use this template again.
- "Internal server error" The copy could not be saved. Select Use this template again.
If the gallery has nothing to show, it reads "No templates are available right now. Check back soon."
