A workspace is where your simulations and coaches live, together with the plan and credit balance that pay for them. Every account has one personal workspace, and anyone signed in can also create an organization workspace to share work with a team, on every plan. This page explains the two kinds of workspace, how to switch between them, how to create an organization, and how to rename or delete one.
Personal and organization workspaces
- A personal workspace is separate from any organization you belong to. It is always listed as Personal, first in the workspace switcher, and it has no name or slug to edit.
- An organization workspace is shared with the people who belong to it. Each person in an organization has a role: owner, admin or member. The person who creates an organization is its owner. Inviting people, roles, seats and the activity log are covered in Members, roles, invitations and the activity log.
Each workspace has its own plan and its own credit balance. Whatever you create belongs to the workspace that is active when you create it, and the app shows one workspace at a time.
Before you start
- You need to be signed in. No particular plan or role is needed to create an organization.
- Choose a name for the organization. You can change it later.
- A new organization starts with no credits. Its plan and credit balance are separate from your personal workspace's.
- A new organization starts on the Free plan. You can own up to 3 workspaces on the Free plan, and your personal workspace counts as one while it is on that plan. Workspaces on a paid plan do not count. At the limit, creating another organization fails with "You already own 3 workspaces on the Free plan. Upgrade or delete one of them to create another." Upgrade one of them, or delete an organization you no longer need, then try again. Subscribing a new organization to the Team plan is the exception, described under the steps below.
Steps
These steps create an organization workspace.
- Open the workspace switcher at the top of the app and select Create organization. The same link is on Settings → Workspaces and on the personal workspace's General settings page, under Working with a team?.
- Under Organization name, enter the name. A name is required.
- Select Create organization.
If you arrive on this page while subscribing an organization to a plan, it also lets you choose an existing organization that you own and that has no paid plan under Which organization?, or Create a new organization…, and the button reads Continue to checkout.
If you already own 3 workspaces on the Free plan, you can still create a new organization this way. Until the checkout is paid, that organization has no hosting, and you can have only one organization waiting on checkout at a time: a second attempt fails with "You already have an organization waiting on Team checkout. Choose it under Which organization? to finish subscribing." If you never complete the checkout and never add anything to the organization, devlin.ai removes it once 48 hours have passed since you last started checkout for it. A check runs once a day, so the removal can happen up to about a day after that. An organization that holds anything you created, uploaded or set up there, or that you invited someone to, is kept, still without hosting until it is on a paid plan.
Result
The organization is created with you as its owner, it becomes your active workspace, and its General settings open. devlin.ai also generates a URL slug from the name: lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens, with a short random ending added if that slug is already in use. From here you can invite your team. See Members, roles, invitations and the activity log.
Switching workspaces
The workspace switcher shows the name of the active workspace at the top of the app. On narrower screens it is a round icon at the start of the navigation strip under the top bar.
- Select the switcher, or press Cmd+Shift+O (Ctrl+Shift+O on Windows). You can also choose Switch workspace… in the command palette.
- Select a workspace. The list shows your personal workspace first, then every organization you belong to, oldest membership first. Each row shows the workspace's plan, and a check mark marks the active one.
While the switch happens the app shows Switching workspace…, then refreshes the current page for the new workspace. Things to know:
- A row shows the credit balance for your personal workspace and for organizations where you are an owner or admin. Members of an organization do not see its credit balance in the switcher.
- If you switch from the simulation editor or the coach editor, you land in Studio for the new workspace, because the item you were editing belongs to the previous one. If you have unsaved changes, you are asked what to do with them first, and cancelling keeps you in the current workspace.
- Your choice is saved to your account, so the same workspace is active the next time you sign in. If you lose access to that workspace, devlin.ai opens your personal workspace instead.
- The gear icon on a row switches to that workspace and opens its settings. It appears for your personal workspace and for organizations where you are an owner or admin. The footer of the menu has the same shortcut for the active workspace: Manage personal workspace or Manage current organization.
The Workspaces list in settings
Settings → Workspaces lists your personal workspace and the organizations where you are an owner or admin. You can also reach it from the account menu with Workspace settings. Organizations where you are a member are not in this list of workspaces you manage; they are in the workspace switcher. Below the list, Organizations you belong to shows every organization you do not own, as a member or admin, with a Leave button on each (see "Leave an organization" below).
Each row shows the workspace's plan and your role. Your personal workspace is labeled Your workspace, and the active one is labeled Current workspace. Selecting a row switches your active workspace to it and opens its settings. Create organization is at the bottom of the list.
Workspace settings
Settings always show the active workspace. To change another workspace's settings, switch to it first, or open it from the Workspaces list.
For a personal workspace, the General page shows the workspace's plan and credit balance, with links to change the plan and buy credits, and Your profile, where you change the name, role, company and team size from the welcome form (see Your account). The workspace itself has nothing to rename.
For an organization where you are an owner or admin, the settings rail shows the organization's name with General, Members, Activity, Integrations and Data & privacy, followed by billing pages. On General you can change:
- Organization name. It cannot be empty, and it can be up to 100 characters long.
- URL slug. A short identifier for the organization that must be unique across devlin.ai. It is 3 to 40 characters long, uses only lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens, and starts and ends with a letter or a number. The field lowercases what you type and drops any other character. If another organization already has the slug, saving fails with "This slug is already taken".
Select Save changes. Settings saved confirms the change, and it is recorded in the organization's activity log. The page uses the new name straight away, including in the confirmation for deleting the organization. Reload the page to see a new name in the workspace switcher. The General page also shows the organization's credit balance.
For an organization where you are a member, you cannot open the organization's General, Members, Activity or Integrations sections. The settings rail shows only Plans and Credits & Billing for the organization, and a link to the organization's settings opens Plans instead.
Sign-in requirements for an organization are covered in SAML SSO and multi-factor authentication.
Deleting an organization
Only the owner can delete an organization. Admins and members do not see the option.
- Switch to the organization and open its General settings.
- Under Danger zone, select Delete organization.
- Type the organization's name exactly, then select Delete organization to confirm. The button stays disabled until the name matches.
The dialog states what is removed: the organization, all its members, simulations, conversations and activity, and any active subscription is cancelled. This cannot be undone. Afterwards you are returned to the app in another of your workspaces, your personal workspace first.
Leave an organization
A member or admin can leave an organization on their own. The owner cannot: transfer ownership first, or delete the organization.
- Open Settings → Workspaces.
- Under Organizations you belong to, select Leave on the organization's row.
- Select Leave organization to confirm.
You lose access to the organization immediately, and your seat is freed. What you built there stays with the organization. To come back, an owner or admin has to invite you again. If the organization was your active workspace, the app reloads into another of your workspaces. See Members, roles, invitations and the activity log.
AI tools over MCP
An AI tool connected through the MCP server can call get_workspace_overview to orient itself in the workspace its connection belongs to. It returns the workspace's name, plan, your role, the access the connection was granted, the credit balance, the number of simulations and coaches, and whether the workspace requires in-app approval for live changes (with the number of pending change requests when it does). For a personal workspace, the name returned is the name on your profile. The capability is read-only: it changes nothing and needs no approval. Creating, renaming and deleting workspaces is not available to AI tools.
